Man dropped dead weeks after minor cycling accident

A man died in front of his mum after a minor cycling accident two weeks before.

Christopher Draper, 40, suffered a cardiac arrest caused by a blood clot that had developed after an accident as he rode home from work.

Mr Draper, a McDonald’s employee, fell off his bike and bashed his leg after slamming on the brakes as a child crossed his path.

An inquest into his death in Grimsby heard that he did not seek hospital treatment.

Two weeks later on June 29, Mr Draper collapsed at his computer in front of his mum.

He then suffered breathing difficulties and his lips turned purple when he collapsed again.

Paramedics were called and spent nearly an hour trying to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead.

His parents Karen and Raymond said their son ‘would do anything for anyone’ and loved video games, Star Wars and Marvel comics.

Karen said he had a passion for World of Warcraft, even helping a fellow gamer who was bullied, and had a special bond with her golden retriever dog.

Karen said: ‘Christopher was a lovely son and I miss him terribly.

‘Every afternoon he always used to make me a cup of tea and bring it up to my office and we would sit and have a good chin wag.

‘His death has really hit us all very hard, and I keep thinking that if he mentioned his leg being sore we could have done something, but he never did.

‘I also know that if he knew what would happen following the accident, he would have done the same thing again and fall off his bike to stop from crashing into a child, he would never have allowed that to happen.’

His dad Raymond said thanked the community and McDonald’s as local people have raised hundreds of pounds in his memory, which will be given to a guide dogs charity.

Raymond said: ‘It is hard trying to comprehend that he is gone, but I guess this is now our new normal.

‘I just love him so much and really wish that he was still here with us.’

Acting coroner for North East Lincolnshire, Mark Kendall, ruled that that Christopher’s death was caused by the cycling accident.
