A man died outside of a coronavirus test centre in Birmingham on Tuesday afternoon.

The unnamed victim collapsed outside of the walk-through venue in Villa Street, Newtown, where it is understood he suffered a cardiac arrest.

Emergency services were made aware of the incident at just before 5pm, with two ambulances and a police car arriving to find the man in a critical condition. Medics immediately began CPR, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service explained: ‘We were called to reports of a medical emergency on Villa Street at 4.57pm yesterday. Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the West Midlands Care Team were sent to the scene.

‘On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, in a critical condition.’

The spokesman continued: ‘Ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support but sadly, despite their best efforts, it became apparent nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.’

It is not clear whether the man had taken a coronavirus test at the facility, or was scheduled to have one.

No other details were released about the man.

West Midlands Police confirmed they attended reports of a man suffering a cardiac arrest in Villa Street, but had no other involvement.

The testing centre, on the corner of Nursery Street, was among the first to open in the country, accepting patients at the start of July.

It was also Birmingham’s first ‘walk-through’ – sparking hopes testing would be made easier for locals.

Serco, which owns the Covid testing site, have been contacted for a statement.
