Man banished from entire town for five years for 'blatant' shoplifting

A serial shoplifter has been banned from going to a town centre and a shopping area for five years.

Daniel Quinlan, 38, was told that if he goes to either Crewe town centre or the Grand Junction Retail Park he faces a jail sentence.

Police said he is a ‘persistent shoplifter who blatantly steals in order to fund his addictions’ and that they asked for the order to protect shops.

The Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) was granted at Chester Crown Court on Friday, and will last until 2027.

In addition, Quinlan is not allowed to be under the influence of any drunk or drugs in any public place.

The court heard his latest offence happened on September 8, when he stole toiletries worth £277.88 from Superdrug.

Sergeant Steve Tandy, of Crewe Local Policing Unit, said: ‘While we have previously attempted to engage with him, there comes a point when you have to say enough is enough and take additional action to protect stores.

‘The ongoing financial crisis has had a significant impact on businesses and the last thing that shops in Crewe need is to continue to be targeted by a serial shoplifter like Quinlan.

‘CBOs are preventative orders with strict restrictions that are imposed in a bid to stop persistent offenders committing further crimes.

‘They are applied for separately to prosecutions for criminal offences as a last resort, and I am pleased to say that we have seen a significant reduction of offending in Cheshire from those who are subject to a CBO.

‘It is an offence to breach the terms of a CBO. The sanctions imposed for doing so can be severe, with the maximum penalty being five years in prison. I hope that the CBO has the desired effect and prevents Quinlan from committing further shoplifting offences.’

Police asked anyone who encounters Quinlan breaching the terms of his CBO to contact Cheshire Constabulary on 101 to report it.
