Man arrested after woman held in flat for 17 hours

A man has been arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment after a woman was held for 17 hours in Birmingham.

Specialist officers and negotiators were called to a flat in Tarrant Grove, Quinton, as the hostage situation emerged at around 5pm on Friday evening.

Armed police were deployed at around 9am on Saturday as the man was allegedly still refusing to release the woman.

Paramedics were also on standby outside the two-bed flat during the incident.

The man gave himself up voluntarily at around 10.30am today, police said.

A local resident said earlier this morning: ‘The police came quickly but there’s not been much progress. It’s a bit of an impasse.



They continued: ‘Then this morning armed police turned up. The police have surrounded the flat.

The road was cordoned off as officers attempted to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.

Birmingham Police said: ‘A man has been arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment after holding a woman overnight in Tarrant Grove Birmingham.

‘The man gave himself up voluntarily just before 10.30am this morning.’
