Man, 60, dies after massive spectator fight at middle school basketball game
A 60-year-old man died after getting involved in a large fight at a middle school basketball game.
Russel Giroux required medical attention after the brawl with several spectators at the seventh and eighth grade basketball game at the Alburgh Community Education Center in Vermont.
Police responded to the incident at 6.56pm on Tuesday and arrived after most of the spectators had left the gymnasium.
Giroux was taken to Northwestern Medical Center in St Albans, where he later died.
The Grand Isle Supervisory Union on Wednesday stated: ‘It is with a heavy heart that I write to you that there was a physical altercation between multiple adults in attendance at last night’s Middle School basketball game between Alburgh Community Education Center and St Albans City Schools.’
Police did not immediately disclose what led up to Giroux getting injured.
A video of the fight shows multiple adults throwing fists at each other on the basketball court with students in the mix.
Giroux was on his way home but instead taken to the hospital, NBC 5 reported. The spectators reportedly got into the altercation over a referee call.
Alburgh neighbor Travis Bailey, a friend of Giroux’s family, said he ‘had just seen him at the girls game right before’ the incident.
‘We’re biased towards our kids’ team and I think last night got completely out of hand,’ Bailey told the TV station.
A medical examiner in Burlington will conduct an autopsy to determine his cause of death.
Police continue to investigate the incident.
The supervisory union commended the coaches and players of both teams – Alburgh and St Albans – and city staff who provided support to the students.
‘Our immediate goal is to remind and educate our students and families that our school culture is one of family, community, and kindness,’ the union stated. ‘We need our students and community to commit to the positive culture that our school community expects and deserves.’
Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact the Saint Albans Barracks.
