Major motorway shut after lorry is consumed by huge fireball
The M6 motorway was closed overnight after a huge fire broke out in a lorry on the northbound carriage way.
Dramatic pictures show the intensity of the fire on the route near Coventry, which broke out shortly after 3am today.
Dozens of firefighters were on the scene tackling the blaze while traffic was stopped in both directions.
The southbound traffic was stopped and diverted onto local roads as a result of the thick clouds of smoke that were rising from the burning lorry.
However, the diversion was later amended so that traffic could leave at junction one and come back onto the motorway at junction 1 as the fire was between the sliproads.
The fire broke out between junction two for Coventry and junction one for Rugby.
Despite the roads reopening it is expected that there may be some knock-on effect as the morning rush hour gets underway.
Traffic was being diverted onto the M69, A5 and A426 causing gridlock on some local roads.
Fire crews from Bedworth and Nuneaton were on the scene while a water bowser from Coleshill was also called out.
