Large parts of Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, Hampshire, have been affected by “a significant water leak”. Only dialysis and chemotherapy appointments will continue at the hospital for the foreseeable future.

NHS Portsmouth Clinical Commissioning Group has told people not to attend appointments this morning.

The hospital, which has nearly 1,000 beds and an emergency department, said: “As a result of a significant water leak affecting large parts of the Queen Alexandra Hospital site, we have declared a major incident. All outpatients appointments scheduled for this morning (Friday 7 January 2022) have been cancelled.

“We apologise for the short notice and any inconvenience this will cause. We will rearrange the appointments as soon as possible. Dialysis and chemotherapy appointments continue as usual.

“We will keep you updated with any developments and potential impact on other services.”

Virtual appointments will still continue, and outpatients may receive a call from the department to have a virtual appointment instead, reports Hampshire Live.

NHS staff shortages ‘an emergency situation’ says Dr Hilary

A major incident is an event or situation, with a number of serious consequences, which requires special arrangements to be implemented.

Staff shortages, largely due to COVID-19, have caused several major incidents at hospitals across the UK this month.

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals and Great Western Hospitals in Wiltshire have all been hit particularly hard.

Speaking this week, Boris Johnson said: “The NHS is under huge pressure.

“I won’t provide a definition of what being overwhelmed would constitute because I think that different trusts and different places, at different moments, will feel at least temporarily overwhelmed.”
