Madeleine McCann: How Kate and Gerry shared what keeps them going as a family
Madeleine McCann’s disappearance remains unsolved, 12 years after the toddler went missing from the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz. Her parents Kate and Gerry McCann still campaign for awareness and have previously released digitally-aged photographs of their daughter in the hope of potential sightings coming to light. To mark the tenth anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance in 2017, Kate and Gerry talked to the BBC’s Fiona Bruce, and shared how they keep going for the sake of their children – Madeleine’s siblings Sean and Amelie.
Ms Bruce asked the couple: “On the face of it, you appear to have stayed so strong as a family unit. I just wonder how you have managed to do that?”
Kate replied: “What people do say is that you don’t realise how strong you are until you have no option and I think that’s very true.
“Obviously massive events like this cause a lot of reaction, a lot of trauma and upset.
“But ultimately you have to keep going – especially when you have got other children involved.”
She continued: “One of our goals was to ensure that Sean and Amelie have a very normal, happy and fulfilling life – and we’ll do everything we can to ensure that.”
Kate also told Ms Bruce that she had returned to work in a different area of medicine and that trying to return to normal routines also helped the family to keep going.
She said: “Life’s busy. I think in some ways, whether it’s our personality or whether it’s a coping strategy, but sometimes it’s almost a little bit too frenetic, but it keeps us going.
“I think we don’t dwell too much on things unnecessarily, so I think that’s probably a self-protective thing there as well.
“We do have a very full life.”
Last month’s Netflix series, “The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann” has reignited public interest in the unsolved case but the eight-part documentary was made without the support of the McCann family.
In a statement on their website, findmadeleine.com, Kate and Gerry said: “We did not see and still do not see how this programme will help the search for Madeleine and, particularly given there is an active police investigation, could potentially hinder it.
“Consequently, our views and preferences are not reflected in the programme.”
