Maddie McCann’s parents speak out after Polish woman takes DNA test

Kate and Gerry McCann have issued a statement in the wake of DNA confirming that a woman claiming to be their missing child Madeleine is “100 percent” from Poland.

Julia Wendell, 21, had sparked months of speculation after she claimed to be Maddie who has still not been found since she went missing in Portugal in 2007.

On Monday Miss Wendell appeared on US talkshow Dr Phil still asserting she was Maddie and talking about how an eye defect she claimed to have shared her had “faded”.

However, a representative for Miss Wendell has since revealed DNA tests have shown she is “100 percent” from Poland. Her family in the country had also vehemently denied she is missing Maddie.

On the Find Maddie Facebook page a woman asked: “Is there any chance of giving us an update? There has been a lot of media about a girl claiming to be Maddie and DNA being done? Is it possible to let your followers know what is going on […]?”

The woman added: “Our thoughts and prayers are always with the McCann family and a safe return of their precious daughter.”

The Mirror reports a representative for the McCann family issued a statement last night saying: “There isn’t anything to report at this time. If and when there is, it will come from The Metropolitan Police.”

Appearing on GB News journalist and former police detective Mark Williams-Thomas was asked by Dan Wootton if it was right to give Miss Wendell “all this exposure on TV” to which he said it was “very sad” and “Dr Phil should not have had her on”.

He said: “This is a lady who is suffering from quite severe mental health issues, she shouldn’t be put on there and given a profile, I mean this is what she wanted, she wanted a platform to gain some recognition.

“I’m very disappointed that Dr Phil has given her this platform, this is a lady now who is really going to have to go into hiding.”

Julia Wendell rocketed into the spotlight after a series of social media posts where she claimed to be missing Maddie went viral, at the time a source close to Maddie’s parents called for the 21-year-old to undergo a DNA test because they’re “willing to look at all leads”.

A source close to the parents said: “The family are taking no chances, they are willing to look at all leads. It is important they look at all of the factors, the girl does look similar. There’s no disputing that.”
