M66 northbound closed after ‘car hits woman’s body’
An investigation has begun after a car hit the body of a woman on the M66 near Bury – leading to the closure of the northbound carriageway.
Great Manchester Police were called at around 2am on Thursday and found the body upon their arrival.
They are now trying to establish how the woman ended up on the motorway.
Police have closed the M66 northbound from Junction 1 to 3 and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
Greater Manchester traffic service added that “lane two is closed on the southbound side at J2” for incident screens to be set up around the area, and are also advising people to find alternative routes.
North West Motorway Police predict the road will be closed for “several hours”.
Highways England has reported queues of traffic over seven miles trying to get on to the nearby A56.
