Shocking photographs capture fierce flames roar from the HGV on the M62 near Rochdale, West Yorkshire. All traffic is being held on the westbound carriageway between junction 22 for Rishworth Moor and junction 21 for Milnrow.
Drivers are being diverted onto local roads, including the A672 through parts of Oldham, Greater Manchester.
Those stuck on the motorway are in queues back to junction 23 for Mount and Outline, near Huddersfield, reports Yorkshire Live.
A brokendown car within the tailbacks is worsening congestion, police say.
Emergency services are tackling the fire, said to have happened at around 1.15pm.
Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted: “#M62 traffic stopped #westbound between #Rishworth & #Milnrow
“This is due to a vehicle fire.
“Delays highly likely, please exit the #M62 at #J22 to continue your journey
“Follow @HighwaysNWEST for updates.”
It is unclear at this stage how the fire started, if anyone is injured and, if so, to what extent.
