Two of the three lanes are closed northbound between junction 39 for Shap and 40 for Penrith. Traffic is queuing and there is congestion on the adjacent A6. The crash happened at about 10am.

Drivers are being told there are delays of about half an hour.

Highways England tweeted: “#M6 northbound #J39 (#Shap) towards #J40 (#Penrith #A66) two lanes are closed due to an overturned vehicle.

“Delays in the area of approx 30 minutes on top of normal journey times.”
