M6 traffic chaos: Huge delays after drivers stuck on route – woman ‘falls from bridge’

After an initial gridlock traffic is now moving slowly again on the M6 heading southbound from Lancashire. Emergency services were called to the scene between junction 25 for Bryn and junction 24 for Ashton-in-Makerfield. Although lanes have now reopened, North West Motorway Police had said there are delays of up to 15 minutes. 

There is also congestion on the M58 heading eastbound at the Orrell Interchange. 

Queues are also expected through Pemberton on the A577. 

Police were called to the incident at 1.15pm today. 

Emergency services reported a woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries. 

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly after 1.15pm this afternoon (Monday, November 22) police were called to a report of a woman falling from a bridge between junction 25 and 24 of the M6.

“Emergency services attended and the woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”

On November 19, a separate crash was reported near Preston.

Two lanes were closed on the northbound carriageway at junction 31. 

The incident was reported trailing back to junction 29 due to the crash. 

A spokesperson for Highways North West said: “Please be aware that this M6 northbound incident is causing delays of 30 mins above normal journey time for this time of day.

“There is approximately four miles of congestion on approach.

“Please allow extra time for your journey if you are travelling in the area this evening.”

The Mancunian Way (A57) was also closed off on Monday evening following an incident with a lorry. 

The road was closed shortly after 4pm. 

A Tweet by Transport for Greater Manchester said: “Mancunian Way is closed westbound above Cambridge St.

“This is due to a road traffic collision.

“Please use Great Ancoats St and Trinity Way as an alternative route if you’re heading this way.”
