M6 closed in both directions as huge lorry fire engulfs motorway in smoke

Several miles of traffic have built up on the M6 after a lorry caught fire earlier this morning, with motorists facing severe delays.

Traffic has been stopped in both directions between junction 38 for Tebay and J39 for Shap, in Cumbria, while firefighters secure the scene.

It is not yet clear the extent of any injuries, how the lorry set ablaze as it headed towards Lancashire or whether any other vehicles were damaged.

The incident took place just after 7.30am this morning and a diversion has been put in place from Junction 36 as motorists are urged to avoid the area.

In a statement, National Highways said: ‘The M6 in Cumbria is closed northbound between J36 (Kendall/Barrow) and J39 (Shap) due to a lorry fire.

‘Emergency services including Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene providing assistance with traffic management.

‘As a result of this incident, the southbound carriageway is also blocked due to the smoke from the fire.

‘Please allow extra time for your journey should you be travelling in the area this morning as there are delays of over 20 minutes in both directions.’
