Cars have been halted on the eastbound carriageway between junction 15 for the M53 and junction 14 for Helsby following a crash.

National Highways said there was a “large amount of debris” on the road.

Motorists have been warned to expect delays.

National Highways North East tweeted just before 6.40pm: “Traffic stopped #M56 eastbound between J15 (#M53) and J14 (#Helsby) due to a collision.

“Large amount of debris across the carriageway.

“Please expect delays, we’ll keep you updated.”
