M56 traffic latest: M56 lane CLOSED as two-vehicle crash sparks delays – ambulance rushes

The accident occurred between junction 12 for Runcorn and junction 14 for Chester Services and Hesby. The carriageway was reopened shortly after the accident was moved to the hard shoulder but long delays remain in place.

Two patients were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

A spokesman for North West Ambulance Service said: “We received a call to an RTC involving a van and large goods vehicle at 10.25am this morning on the M56.

“A rapid response vehicle was dispatched and the clinician has treated two patients with minor injuries.”

All lanes were closed until around 10.55am before all traffic was stopped.

North West Motorway Police posted on Twitter: “Following the RTC on the M56 J14 – J12, all lanes are now re-open & amazingly no one injured.

“One driver being reported for offences after admitting to falling asleep at the wheel.”

One driver admitted falling asleep at the wheel, according to police.

National Highways North West tweeted: “The #M56 westbound #J12 (#LiverpoolAirport #Frodsham #Runcorn #Widnes) to #J14 / Chester Services (#Helsby #Stanlow #ChesterZoo) 1 lane has been closed due to a collision.

“Traffic Officers & Recovery are currently at the scene.”

They later confirmed the vehicle had been moved to a “place of safety”.
