Queues are severe on the southbound carriageway from junction 1 for West Bromwich, West Midlands, following the smash near junction 3 for Quinton area of Birmingham and Halesowen, West Midlands. Two of the three lanes along most of this stretch are shut, Highways England warns.

The collision happened at around 6.30am, Birmingham Live reports.

Emergency services are in attendance, it is understood, but authorities say drivers face delays of up to one hour and 30 minutes.

A diversion hasn’t been put in place but some drivers are avoiding the motorway by leaving at junction 1 to use local roads through the Smethwick and Langley Green areas.

They then are using the A4123 south into Quinton, where they can rejoin the M5 at junction 3.

But these roads are congested as a result.

National Highways said: “Two lanes of three are closed on the M5 southbound between J2 (Oldbury) and J3 (Quinton) due to a collision.

“Traffic Officers and emergency services are in attendance. There is currently 3.2 miles of congestion leading causing 20 min delays above normal travel time.”

Northbound traffic is slow as a result of onlookers.

It’s congested from just north of junction 4, which is for Rubery, Birmingham, and parts of Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.
