The woman was seen walking on the carriageway of the M4 between junctions 5 and 4B eastbound at around 4.15am when she was involved in a collision with the heavy goods vehicle.

The driver of the lorry was not injured in the incident at Langley.

The motorway was closed for several hours but has now reopened.

Police are urging witnesses and anyone with dash-cam footage to contact them.

Senior Investigating Officer Sergeant Matt Cadmore, of Thames Valley Police’s Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit, said: “This was a tragic incident which has very sadly resulted in the death of a female pedestrian.

“I am appealing to anybody who was driving on the M4 at around the time of the collision to please check their dash-cam footage and contact Thames Valley Police if it has captured anything that can assist this investigation.

“I would also urge anybody who saw the female on the carriageway in the moments leading up to the collision, or who witnessed the incident, to please get in touch.

“You can do so by calling 101, or report online, quoting incident reference number 0200 of 27 January.

“Enquiries are ongoing to identify the victim’s next of kin, and that remains one of our top priorities at this time.”

No arrests have been made.

National Highways East tweeted at 5.20am: “The #M4 eastbound between J5 #Langley #Staines and J4B #M25 @HeathrowAirport is currently closed due to a serious collision.

“Police are on scene and the road is expected to remain closed for some time.

“Please allow plenty of extra journey time and use alternative routes.”

There were 90-minute delays for motorists with congestion almost back to Junction 7.

In an update just after 11.20am, National Highways England confirmed the motorway had been reopened and delays were clearing quickly.
