M25 traffic latest: M25 closed after TWO horror pile-ups – more than 16 MILES of queues

At around 6am on Monday morning two cars and a van were involved in a collision on the M25 clockwise carriageway near Reigate. Traffic is queuing for 16 miles with delays of two hours, Highways England report. The incident took place between J8 and J9 and lanes four and three have been closed as a result. A second car collision is affecting J9 between Leatherhead and Cobham.

Highways England have said: “There are 120 minute delays on the approach to this M25 incident (above usual journey times) spanning 16 miles back to J5.

“Average speeds on the approach to J8 are 8mph.”

Congestion is also affecting M26 and M23 towads Gatwick.

A second multi-vehicle incident has also taken place further down the carriageway, closing three lanes between J9 for Leatherhead and Cobham services.

The incident, which involved two cars and two vans, is adding to the existing delays on the busy commuter motorway.

Travel news service Inrix said: “All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident, two cars and two vans involved on M25 clockwise between J9 A243 (Leatherhead) and Cobham Services.

“Traffic has been held since 8.05am to attend to the accident across lanes two, three and four. Cobham services are located between J9 and J10.”

Traffic is also queuing further down the M25, just before Clacket Lane Services between J5 and J6.

This is due to a broken down van, causing one lane to be closed.

Highways England have advised drivers to take alternative routes.

A spokesman said: “The M25 currently has delays of at least 120 minutes from J8 to J9, covering several miles of the clockwise carriageway. The delays are due to a road traffic collision and recovery with lane 1 (of 4) closed and Highways England has resources deployed working hard to restore normal conditions as soon as possible.

“For traffic approaching the delays locally, you are advised to expect disruption with extra journey time and you may wish to re-route or delay your journey.

“If travelling towards this area from much farther afield, you may wish to change your strategic route, allow extra travel time and follow guidance from our on-road variable message signs and media.”

All lanes on the M25 clockwise carriage have since reopened, although severe traffic delays remain.

Commuters have taken to social media to vent their anger at the delays.

One person wrote: “Reigate is a car par this morning! Drivers crashed just past the slip on M25 J8.”

Another person said shortly after 6am: “Been sitting on M25 at Reigate not moving for 30mins and three lanes closed, gonna be a great day.”
