Firefighters rushed to the scene between Junction 27 and Junction 28 just before 10am. Police are also attending the incident.

All traffic is being held on the clockwise carriageway.

The anti-clockwise carriageway has been reopened.

Dramatic pictures show smoke billowing into the sky as firefighters tackle the blaze.

National Highways East tweeted at 9.50am: “Traffic held due to a lorry fire #M25 both directions between J27 #Epping and J28 #A12.

“Essex County Fire & Rescue Service are on scene.

“Delays are building on approach, we’ll keep you updated.”

An update just before 10.15am added: “Traffic has been released on the #M25 anti-clockwise between J28 (#A12) and J27 (#Epping).

“The clockwise carriageway is now closed. Work to extinguish the fire remains ongoing.”

Motorists caught up in the tailbacks on the motorway took to Twitter.

One person, Faith Spinks, posted: “Yikes… fire on the M25. Not going to be going anywhere for a while!

“Police have had to stop idiot drivers trying to sneak down the hard shoulder.”

Another user, John Ford, shared a snap of thick smoke from the lorry blaze as cars queue.

They said: “#M25 closed clockwise just before #A12 vehicle on fire!”

Thurrock Council said there were delays of around 30 minutes.

It tweeted just after 10.15am: “A lorry has caught fire on the M25 between junctions 27 and 28 with traffic blocked in both directions.

“There are currently delays of 30 minutes above normal journey times both north and southbound. Please plan your journey accordingly.”
