A collision on the M23 has shut down two lanes of traffic near Gatwick Airport
They are closed between Junction 9 to Gatwick Airport, and Junction 8 to the M25.
National Highways England report that the lanes are in the process of being cleared.
Delays of up to 20 minutes are expected as 6 miles of congestion stretch down the motorway.
Traffic is moving very slowly along the road, right next to London’s second busiest airport.
The lanes are not anticipated to be cleared for another 45 minutes.
The problem is exacerbated by a broken down car further along the same stretch of motorway.
The incident was first reported at 12.13pm by traffic news agency Inrix.
Friday’s rush hour is rapidly approaching, causing concern that the incident may lead to even worse congestion.
The AA reported: “Severe delays of 21 minutes and delays increasing on M23 Northbound between J9 (Gatwick Airport) and J8 M25 J7. Average speed ten mph.”
National Highways England confirmed: “2 lanes ( of 4) are closed on the M23 northbound between J9 near Gatwick Airport and J8, following a collision.
“The vehicles are currently being moved/recovered. Delays of 20 minutes; 6 miles of congestion on the approach.”
