M1 TRAFFIC LATEST: M1 closed after serious crash near Meadowhall shopping centre

South Yorkshire police said the northbound stretch is closed at Junction 34, just north of the Tinsley Viaduct. The force said there has been a “serious road traffic collision” and emergency services are at the scene. Motorists have been advised to “avoid this area if possible” due to “significant delays”.

Highways England said: “Due to the serious nature of the incident it will take approximately two hours to clear all trapped traffic.

“Any trapped traffic will be dealt with as soon as possible.

“Please bear with us.”

South Yorkshire Police have said the M1 southbound at J34 has reopened, but the M1 northbound remains closed.

Highways England announced just before 10.30am that they are beginning “rearward relief” of trapped traffic from the area.

In a Tweet they said: “We are beginning rearward relief to remove trapped traffic from the area.

“It will take approx 2 hours to clear all trapped vehicles.

“Await instructions from #TrafficOfficers, we will keep you updated.”
