Lyra McKee latest: Police release CCTV of suspected gunman behind IRA murder
Officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) released the new footage showing a man they suspect of being the gunman and member of the New IRA who shot the reporter during violent riots in the Creggan area of Derry last Thursday. Footage shows a man in dark Nike trainers with white soles wearing black trousers, a black jacket, a cap and his face covered with a cloth. Detective superintendent Jason Murphy said members of the public who witnessed the riots are likely to have seen the suspect, the Irish Times reports.
He added he was keen to “convert community information and intelligence into tangible evidence to allow me to bring this individual to justice”.
He said: “What I need is the public to tell me who he is, provide me with the evidence that links that footage to that individual and therefore link him to the murder of Lyra McKee.”
He also believes that as the crowd were teenagers during the disorder that led to Ms McKee being gunned down, the gunman is also in his teens.
The New IRA is the largest dissident republican group currently operating in Northern Ireland.
The terror group have been linked with four murders, including PC Ronan Kerr, who was killed by an under-car bomb in Omagh in 2011.
The group is also linked to the deaths of prison officers David Black, who was shot as he drove to work at Maghaberry Prison in 2012.
Another victim of the group was Adrian Ismay, who died in 2016 after a bomb exploded under his van outside his home in east Belfast.
They are believed to have formed between 2011 and 2012.
The Real IRA were the group behind the 1998 Omagh bomb.
They operated mostly in Derry, also known as Londonderry, north and west Belfast and Tyrone.
This year the group was responsible for a car bomb outside the courthouse in Bishop Street, in the city of Derry.
They were also behind the parcel bomb sent to London Waterloo and other locations in March.
Prime Minister Theresa May reacted furiously to the fatal shooting of Ms McKee, 29.
Mrs May said: “The death of Lyra McKee in last night’s suspected terrorist incident in Londonderry is shocking and truly senseless.
“My deepest condolences go to her family, friends and colleagues.
“She was a journalist who died doing her job with great courage.”
