Luxury Mexican hotel where American couple were found dead closes
A luxury resort in Mexico where an American couple were found dead in their room has closed its doors.
Rancho Pescadero Hotel in Baja California Sur, where a room was listed at $600 per night, on Sunday temporarily shuttered amid an investigation into the deaths of two American tourists.
Abby Lutz, 28, and her boyfriend John Heathco, 41, both from Newport Beach, California, were discovered dead in their hotel room on June 13.
The Hyatt, which owns the property, ‘together with the hotel’s owners… is conducting an extensive, independent investigation of the incident led by a third party’, a spokesperson for the hospitality company told the Los Angeles Times on Thursday.
A Hyatt spokesperson told CBS Los Angeles on Wednesday: ‘Our top priority is the safety and wellbeing of guests and colleagues and the property will not resume normal operations until our investigation is complete.’
Last Thursday, local prosecutors said the autopsies suggested that Lutz and Heathco died of ‘intoxication by an undetermined substance’.
The couple had been dead for 11 to 12 hours when hotel staff found them unresponsive, according to the Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office.
Lutz’s family said the couple were treated for what they believed was food poisoning at a Mexican hospital on the Sunday prior. They were treated for dehydration.
‘We were told they were feeling much better a few days later,’ Lutz’s sister Gabrielle Slate wrote on a GoFundMe page for her funeral expenses. ‘We received a phone call saying that they had passed away peacefully in their hotel room in their sleep.’
Their bodies did not show signs of violence. Local law enforcement officials initially said the suspected cause of death was gas inhalation.
Guests who had booked stays at the hotel have been contacted, the Times reported. Some were referred to another Hyatt property in Cabo San Lucas, which is about 45 miles southeast of the seaside village of El Pescadero.
