Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel admitted to hospital with Covid
Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel has been taken to hospital after catching Covid.
The country’s leader was admitted as a ‘precautionary measure’ on Sunday, local media reports.
He is expected to remain under observation for 24 hours as ‘additional tests and analyses’ are carried out.
Mr Bettel was given his first AstraZeneca vaccine dose on May 6 and was due to receive his second jab on Thursday.
He tested positive on 27 June after suffering mild symptoms including a headache and fever.
The politician’s team previously said he would work from home while self-isolating.
It comes as Luxembourg sees a jump in infections – in particular over the last fortnight.
A total of 136 people tested positive on Friday – the highest daily figure since mid-May.
The country has largely kept the pandemic under control, with 818 deaths since it hit last year.
Just over 71,000 cases have been confirmed in the same time frame.
