Lord Snowdon and his wife Serena have decided to split after 26 years of marriage. Theirs is the second such announcement in a week after Peter Phillips, the Queen’s eldest grandson, and his wife Autumn announced they had filed for divorce. 

Who is Lord Snowdon? 

David Armstrong Jones is the son of Queen Elizabeth’s sister Princess Margaret and her husband, the first Earl of Snowdon. 

He was born on November 3, 1961, and took up his father’s title on his death in 2017 after being stylised Viscount Linley. 

Although he is Queen Elizabeth II’s eldest grandchild, the Earl is not a working royal.

Lord Snowdon is known professionally as David Linley, an English furniture maker and former chairman of Christie’s UK.

He started out making furniture from a workshop in Dorking, which he expanded into a business now known as Linley.

After gathering momentum, the Earl’s works sold out of a range of boutique stores, including Harrods, Belgravia and other overseas retailers. 

However, he lost control of the company after selling off his controlling shares in 2012 for £4 million. 

The Earl of Snowdon married Serena Alleyne Stanhope in 1993, at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster. 

Some 650 people were in attendance on the day, including Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and Princess Diana. 

The couple has two children together, 21-year-old Charles Patrick Inigo Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley, and Lady Margarita Elizabeth Rose Alleyne Armstrong-Jones, 18.

Today, the couple announced they had filed divorce papers after 26 years of marriage.

In a statement, an official spokesperson for the couple announced the decision was “amicable”. 

They said: “The Earl and Countess of Snowdon have amicably agreed that their marriage has come to an end and that they shall be divorced.

“They ask that the press respect their privacy and that of their family.”

A source added while they have been living “separate lives” there is no “blame or acrimony”.

They said: “David and Serena have agreed that their marriage has broken down, they have in effect been living separate lives for some time.

“But they are determined to handle their separation in a civilised manner.

“There is no blame or acrimony on either side.

“They have simply reached a point at which they both feel they have to move on.”
