Lord Mountbatten family tree: How was Mountbatten related to Prince Philip and Charles?

Lord Louis Mountbatten was a German aristocrat who shared an incredibly close relationship with members of the Royal family. Known as ‘Dickie’ to family and friends, Lord Mountbatten was killed on August 27, 1979, when IRA terrorists blew up his boat off the coast of County Sligo, Ireland. Tonight, BBC Two will mark the 40th anniversary of his death in a new documentary called The Day Mountbatten Died from 9pm.While Express.co.uk takes a look at Lord Mountbatten’s family tree.

How was Lord Mountbatten related to Prince Philip and Charles?

Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas Mountbatten was born in Windsor on June 25, 1900, a great-grandson of Queen Victoria, and the son of Prince Louis of Battenberg.

A British naval officer during World War Two, Lord Mountbatten oversaw the defeat of the Japanese offensive towards India.

With his wife, Edwina Mountbatten, Countess Mountbatten of Burma, Lord Mountbatten was father to two daughters – Patricia Knatchbull, later 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma, and Lady Pamela Hicks.

It is also well documented Lord Mountbatten had a strong presence in the lives of Royal family members, but none more so than his nephew Prince Philip and great-nephew Prince Charles.

Prince Philip was born into the families of Greek and Danish royalty.

Having been born in Greece, his family were later exiled from the country while Philip was still very young.

After his mother was institutionalised, Prince Philip lived with the Mountbatten’s for many years.

Mountbatten has even been credited with introducing a young Prince Philip to the then-Princess Elizabeth.

Lord Mountbatten was seen as a father figure to the young Prince Charles as well, with the Prince of Wales once describing Lord Mountbatten as the “grandfather I never had”.

Although it is unknown whether the name Louis has been featured in Royal names as a tribute to Lord Mountbatten, the youngest son of Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, was named Prince Louis upon his birth in 2017.

‘Louis’ also features as one of the middle names of Prince George.

Lord Louis Mountbatten was killed by the IRA in 1979.

He had been fishing on his boat off the coast of Ireland, with his twin grandsons and other members of his family.

After a bomb detonated, the 79-year-old Mountbatten was pulled from the water alive, but died from the injuries he had sustained before reaching the shore.

The IRA would later claim responsibility for the attack.

On Monday, 19 August, the assassination of Lord Louis Mountbatten will be the subject of a documentary on BBC Two.

‘The Day Mountbatten Died’ will follow the events surrounding Lord Mountbatten’s death, and the three others on his boat who also died on the same day.
