Black and white Great Dane Diego is nearly a metre tall. He travels with his owner, Carlos, on his daily commute from Wembley to work in Bravos Motorcycles, Bethnal Green. Diego sits in the sidecar of his K-750 motorbike with special goggles Carlos calls “doggles”.

Carlos told MyLondon: “If I touch the sidecar, he knows we’re going out.

“Great Danes are lazy. Everywhere they go, they sit. I put him on the sidecar and he sat down, and that’s it.”

Diego loves his sidecar so much that he’ll follow it out onto the street if he so much as hears the growl of its engine.

Diego once went missing from Bravos’ garage only to be found outside at the traffic lights, having his photo taken and wondering why the motorbike, taken out by a mechanic, had left without him.

Carlos’ wife Ellie was initially terrified of dogs, and took 17 years of persuading. Now, Carlos says she would probably choose the colossal canine over him.

Six years since they picked him up on Christmas Day, Diego and Carlos are inseparable.

Carlos explained that, whenever and wherever he sits down, Diego will always sit on his lap.

This includes the sofa, the Tube, or simply when Carlos needs to put his shoes on.

Diego is also a fan of popping down to the pub. He is the first dog in history to have become a Gold Member at The Bike Shed, a motorcycle club in Shoreditch.

Carlos said: “When we go there, it says on the table: ‘This table is reserved for Diego and his human’.”

However, Carlos admits, the six foot long pooch has yet to develop his table manners.

He said Diego will steal food from Carlos, their other dog Nelson.

He said: “If some guys are having lunch and they blink, Diego will grab it. If he sees pizza, his favourite food, he gets crazy – he’s a different dog. He’ll do anything for pizza.”

Diego has become something of a local celebrity. During his morning walk in Victoria Park, doting fans will slip him treats – when they’re not, as Carlos reports, mistaking him for a cow.

He added: “If you want to meet people and make friends, walk a Great Dane in London. Everyone wants to come and talk and take pictures. The tube is a nightmare sometimes.

“In East London, almost everyone knows him. Sometimes when we stop, people don’t want to pass – they want to see him, and it makes a traffic jam.”

Carlos added that he has taken to wearing a balaclava to keep a low profile.

The pair were once stopped by police – but it turned out that they just wanted to take a photo of the unusual couple.

Originally from Brazil, Carlos bought Diego in 2015. His wife Ellie was not so sure about the pooch – as someone who was terrified of dogs, she took 17 years of persuading.

They received the call on Christmas Day – a breeder had one Great Dane left.

Carlos set off to Peterborough at 11am to collect his new best friend.

Since then, Carlos says, Ellie has been won round.

Carlos said: “Now, if I asked her to choose [between] me or Diego, Diego would stay.

“She does everything for them – they control the house.”
