London state school is sending 55 students to Oxbridge – more than Eton College

A-Level students across the country are learning their fate today after exams were cancelled for the second year in a row.

But the day may already belong to a state school in east London, where 55 students have secured places at Oxford and Cambridge.

Brampton Manor Academy is sending Twitter into meltdown after its amazing display of success, with 330 students taking up places at the top Russell Group Universities.

The incredible feat even tops £42,500-a-year Eton College – which educated Boris Johnson and Prince William – which received 48 Oxbridge offers.

Announcing its success, the East Ham school tweeted: ‘We are really pleased to confirm that 55 of our students have now secured their places at Oxford and Cambridge universities.

‘Well done to you all. We are very proud of you.’

Almost half (44.8%) of A-Level grades in England, Wales and Northern Ireland this year were an A or A* this year.

This marks a surge from last year when 38.5% scored the top grades after Covid shut schools for the first time.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has been forced to defend the results against claims of ‘grade inflation’.

He has insisted students’ ‘hard work deserves to be rewarded with a qualification’ after the struggles of the pandemic.

It comes after teachers were advised to use their judgement, basing marks on ‘mini-exams’, coursework and mock exams.

The proportion of entries awarded A* grades has surged to 19.1% – the highest since the top grade was first introduced in 2010.

Figures published by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) show girls received more As and A*s than boys this year.

Female maths students overtook boys for the first time in the number of A* grades achieved.

Some 6.9% of students in England were awarded three A*s this year – compared with 4.3% in 2020 and 1.6% in 2019, according to an analysis by Ofqual.

These numbers do not include the Scottish Highers results, which are released later on Tuesday.
