Video footage shared on social media shows a large police presence in the busy London street near the entrance to the tube station. One person claimed to have seen an “horrific stabbing”. This is currently unconfirmed.
An eye-witnessed tweeted: “Just witnessed a horrific stabbing of a poor 60yr old man at Oxford Circus.
“Broad daylight, no apparent rhyme or reason.
“Just another scumbag with a knife.
“His family probably aren’t even aware yet.
“I pray to God he gets to walk out of that hospital.”
Jambusters tweeted: “A4201 Oxford Circus (All Directions) – Closed because of a police incident.
“Use an alternative route.
“Traffic is moderate on diversion. Expect some delay.”
Tube passengers are also being told to evacuate as the underground is closed.
One person tweeted: “What on earth is happening at Oxford Circus?!
“Just got rushed out of tube station due to a reported emergency and police and sirens everywhere!”
Transport for London confirmed the station is closed while they respond to a security alert.
However, firefighters have said they have nothing to do with the police incident but are investigating a “fire alarm”.
Express.co.uk has approached the police for a comment.
