London sex attacks: Police appeal after two women assaulted in linked incidents in Borough
The Metropolitan Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after the horrific incidents in the early hours of July 20. Police said a woman was raped at around 2.15am after she was approached by a man while walking down Great Dover Street in Southwark. A Scotland Yard statement said: “She was grabbed around the neck from behind, threatened, and taken to a nearby wooded track leading from Brockham Street to Dickens Fields by an unknown man. She was then raped a number of times.”
The woman finally managed to escape to Trinity Church Square, a nearby residential street.
Police said at this point a car stopped. After speaking to the attacker, the driver left.
Almost immediately a car pulled up beside the victim, causing the attacker to flee. The driver drove the woman to Walworth Police station.
Police are unsure whether the car was a second vehicle, or the first returning. They are appealing for the driver, or drivers, to speak to police.
Later that morning a second woman was assaulted.
She was attacked in Borough High Street at around 3.50am.
Police said: “In this incident, the suspect grabbed hold of the woman, led her down a nearby street but then left the scene. She was physically unharmed.”
Scotland Yard is appealing for witnesses to both attacks – especially the driver, or drivers, who intervened in the first.
Detective Sergeant Jonny Norman said: “We are very keen to trace the driver of the vehicle who drove the victim to Walworth police station.
“Did you drive a distressed women to Walworth Police Station, in the small hours of Saturday, 20 July? We would like to speak to you to support our ongoing investigation.
“We would also like to speak to the first driver who originally stopped, although unfortunately we do not have a description of this person.
“We are treating both of these individuals as possible witnesses and we would like to highlight that you are not in trouble.”
A 28-year-old man has been charged in connection with both incidents. He will appear in court later this month.
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation and has information about either incident, is urged to contact police via 101, or by tweeting @MetCC quoting CAD reference CAD 6111/02Aug19.
