London set for three days of snow as Storm Darcy batters UK

Snow could hammer London for three days with weather warnings in place until Wednesday.

Severe weather warnings have been issued across the UK with London and the South East given an amber warning for today, followed by yellow warnings tomorrow and through Wednesday.

Around 2 to 5 inches of snow is predicted by the Met Office across the capital.

The forecaster also says heavy snow is likely to block roads and cause travel delays, with ‘many stranded vehicles and passengers likely’.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: ‘Monday will start cold for all.

‘Snow will continue to fall in south-east England, with further snow showers elsewhere.’

Areas under the warning include the outskirts of south-east London, plus Kent, Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk.

Heavy snow is forecast for today, then ‘frequent snow showers’ for the coming two days.

It comes as the country is being battered by Storm Darcy during a cold snap this week, with temperatures dropping to freezing with heavy snow and strong winds coming to many areas.

The weather is being driven by easterly winds from Ukraine and the Black Sea – at times called Beast from the East II – but are not expected to be as widespread as the first Beast from the East in 2018.

The Met Office warns there may be interruptions to power supplies and other services including gas, water, telephone and mobile phone services. Rural communities could become cut off entirely.

Another amber weather warning is in place across Nottinghamshire, Sheffield and Lincolnshire, reaching 6 inches in some areas.

Both amber warnings are in force until this afternoon.

Less severe yellow warnings are in force across most of the rest of the UK, although some places could see up to a foot of snow.
