The horrifying incident occurred in West Norwood at around 8am on Tuesday as the 11-year-old was on his way to school. The schoolboy was flown to hospital by air ambulance and is said to be in a “critical condition”.

A statement from a spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police said: “Officers were called at 8:13am on Tuesday, October 4, to reports of a collision involving a bus and a pedestrian in Norwood Road, SE27.

“London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance also attended and the pedestrian, an 11-year-old boy, was taken to hospital – he remains there in a critical condition.”

According to Scotland Yard, the bus driver stopped at the scene and is helping them in their investigation.

The child’s next of kin have been informed and no arrests have been made.

Police officers are asking the public for information from witnesses and any dash-cam footage which may have been picked up by drivers in the area at the time of the incident.

Those with any information have been urged to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 020 8285 1574 or call 101 with reference CAD1307/04OCT.

Vision Zero London records the latest pedestrian and cyclist deaths in London and shows that 142 pedestrians have been killed by vehicles on the road since 2020.

Meanwhile, it is thought that at least 16 cyclists have been killed following a collision with a vehicle on London’s roads.

The City of London’s Transport Strategy was adopted in May 2019 and aims to prioritise the needs of pedestrians and reduce motor traffic, including delivery and servicing vehicles in the Square Mile.

The strategy aims to eliminate death and serious injuries from the streets due to vehicle accidents by reducing speeds and making the roads more efficient.

Meanwhile, the Road Danger Reduction and Active Travel Plan is a five-year strategy to ensure the City of London is safe for all road users.

It also adheres to the Safe Systems Approach aiming to deliver Vision Zero by 2041, a move which hopes to eradicate all deaths and serious injuries from the capital’s transport network.

The City of London’s road safety strategy stated: “We have a role to play in reducing casualties and encouraging safer speeds, safer streets, safer vehicles and safer behaviours.”

The Road Danger Reduction group work closely with the City of London Police and Transport for London (TFL) to inform residents and schools about safe road use.

The group said: “We are committed to supporting sustainable and safe travel to school. Children enjoy a fun-packed programme while being taught valuable skills.

“We believe educating children from a young age encourages responsible road users and safer travel behaviours.”
