London panic: Knifeman sparks panic at Peckham train station – police race to scene
Officers were called to the scene at 12:20pm to reports a man was armed with a knife and having a “mental health crisis”. After police arrived, it appeared the man had already left in a car. He was later located by police after a search of the area.
The man left the vehicle in Queens Road and ran along the railway lines to the train station.
Police claimed the man then boarded a train, which was busy with passengers, still armed with a knife.
Sources told Express.co.uk police went in pursuit of the armed man who then ran on to a train at the south London station.
Police tasered him on the train in the station.
The man is said to be in his 50s and is believed to have been spotted with the knife in a car in Peckham, which sparked the alert.
Initial reports from those claiming to be at the scene said people had been stabbed, but police said no one was injured in the chaos.
London Ambulance Service have attended the scene and the man has been detained under the Mental Health Act.
Detective Superintendent Nicky Arrowsmith from the Central South Command Unit said: “This incident highlights the challenges that police officers confront on a daily basis.
“I am very proud of the courage and determination of all the officers involved, and pleased that their work helped ensure no member of the public suffered any harm.”
One witness wrote on Twitter: “There is a MADNESS in Queens Road right now.
“Helicopter, closed the station, armed police, dogs, bully vans, cars, halted the trains, cameras.”
