The London New Year’s Eve fireworks display is a huge annual event for the capital. More than 12,000 fireworks feature in the display, which is set to music and watched by around 12 million people on TV. The immensely popular event is watched worldwide and throughout the UK each year.

The mayor added: “What we are working on is to do something that people can enjoy in the comfort and safety of their living rooms on TV.”

Mr Khan said that the exact details of what would happen on the night in question have not been yet finalised, but an alternative will be arranged.

He said: “As soon as we manage to bottom that out I’ll be letting Londoners and people across the country know.
