Several boroughs in the capital run the risk of being put into a local lockdown after a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases. Cases are spiking up and down the country with various areas being places into lockdown lockdowns in an attempt to stymie the spread.
Latest data published by Public Health England shows that five boroughs have a particularly high rate of coronavirus cases, sparking concern that measures may need to be brought in in the capital.
The five boroughs with the highest infection rate currently are Redbridge, Hounslow, Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Enfield.
Cases rose by 90 or more in the seven days to September 12 in the following boroughs: Ealing, Enfield, Hounslow, Newham, Redbridge and Tower Hamlets.
The Government is currently working on a threshold of 40 cases per 100,000 as being when stricter measures are needed in an area.
While rates are growing in the capital, it is still far off some areas in the country, with Bolton having a 196.1 per 100,000 people infection rate.
Fears are growing that restrictions may be put in place across parts or all of the capital to stop further spread of the disease.
Measures put in place in Bolton include a ban on hosting others at your home or garden, closure of hospitality services, a 10pm curfew and a ban on leaving the area.
Whether these restrictions will come into place in London is yet to be seen.
Six months ago London was hit fast and hard by the pandemic before it spread to other areas of the country.
Public Health England’s surveillance studies estimated that up to 17.5 percent of Londoners had caught the virus by late June.
In contrast, separate estimates suggest that only between 5 percent and 7 percent of the UK population overall has been infected.
In some parts of the UK it is as low as 3 percent – suggesting that as a nation we are far off reaching heard immunity levels, which must sit between 60 percent and 80 percent.
