London lockdown: Boris plans huge coronavirus closures with announcement possible TODAY
Despite a raft of possible closurers, No10 sources today said a full-scale lockdown of the size seen in cities across Europe is still unlikely. Cities across northern Italy, as well as European capitals including Brussels, are in full lock-down, with movement restricted. While non-essential services in London such as bars and cafes could close and travel will be reduced, there will be no restrictions on people leaving their homes, sources indicated.
A source close to the Prime Minister said there was “zero prospect” of travel being restricted in or out of London.
However, the city’s travel network is expected to be reduced to a skeletal service. The Tube will close 40 non-essential stations as early as today and operate a reduced service for other stations.
Travel in and out of the city will remain unaffected, Government sources said this lunchtime, in contrast to measures brought in across Europe.
Purposeful or reckless spreaders of the disease, however, could also be detained under new powers.
This is a developing story, more to follow…
