Scientific Advisor to Abington Health Professor Lawrence Young has insisted Boris Johnson must shut the UK’s borders immediately. While speaking to Nick Ferrari on his LBC show, Professor Young warned that the third coronavirus wave plaguing Europe could spread to the UK. He reiterated that the UK could not afford to let its guard down at this point.

Prof Young insisted that what happens with Europe will have a direct impact on the UK.

He also reacted to questions on whether Britons should consider booking holidays.

Mr Ferrari said: “Where are you on the idea of a traffic light system.

“Countries on red zones, no holidays till August, what are your thoughts on all of that professor?”

The professor replied: “I think the situation in mainland Europe is very worrying.

“Over 200,000 new cases every year and 2000 deaths every day.

“We cannot afford, we literally cannot afford to let our guard down.

“I do believe restrictions from across the Channel, certainly from France, need to be in place as soon as possible.

Lockdown easing: Expert reveals he expects cases to rise

“I think looking at foreign holidays before August is very challenging.”

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel introduced stricter anti-Covid measures last week and French President Emmanuel Macron is believed to be considered a new lockdown as physicians warn of a devastating overload in ICUs across the nation.

However, Prof Young did admit that the UK is currently taking a good cautious approach and is on target to relax further measures on schedule.

Mr Ferrari said: “They call it a roadmap but I like to call it a plan.

“Are we still on plan for a further lifting of measures in a couple of weeks time in April, for the next tier or cohort?”

Professor Young said: “I don’t see why not and I think the roadmap is taking the cautious approach.

“It is leaving gaps between each relaxation so the impact on infections can be carefully monitored.

“I think everything is looking okay, the big thing at the moment is what is going on across the Channel and what will happen there.”
