Lockdown: Can you report businesses flouting the lockdown rules?
Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday announced strict measures the UK has to face to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Britons were urged to stay home and only head outside if absolutely necessary.
Non-essential shops were told to close, with only those selling essential items like food and medication to remain open.
Mr Johnson said people would only be allowed to leave home for:
- shopping for basic necessities, as infrequently as possible
- one form of exercise a day – for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household;
- any medical need, to provide care or to help a vulnerable person;
- and travelling to and from work, but only where this is absolutely necessary and cannot be done from home.

Can you report businesses flouting the lockdown rules?
Gatherings of more than two people in public are banned, with the police granted the power to deal with those who disobey.
This means if you see a non-essential business not complying with the rules and trading anyway, you can report it to the police.
You could also report any groups of people you see clearly breaking the lockdown rules.
Police will be able to issue “unlimited fines” to those who do not comply with new rules on social distancing, the health secretary has told the House of Commons.
Matt Hancock told MPs police would be enforcing the new rule with fines.
These start from £30 but can be “unlimited” the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care has stated.
Mr Hancock said: “These measures are not advice, they are rules and will be enforced, including by the police with fines starting at £30 up to unlimited fines for non compliance.
“Home is now the front line, and in this national effort, working together, we can defeat this disease. Everyone has a part to play.”
