Freda Walker died and her husband Kenneth, 88, a former mayor of Bolsover, is fighting for his life in hospital following an attack at their home in Langwith Junction, Derbyshire, on Friday night. Police have launched a murder investigation and urged people to keep their doors and windows locked while officers hunt the killer.

Chief Superintendent Hayley Barnett of Derbyshire Police said: “While I cannot talk about the mechanics of how the injuries happened, what I do urge people to do is to carry out good security in relation to their homes.

“Keep their doors and windows locked and do not let any strangers in.

“Don’t keep any valuables on display.

“And to have a means of making contacting with emergency services if needs be.”

Emergency services were called to the property in Station Road on Saturday morning.

Police refused to confirm how Mrs Walker died.

Chf Supt Barnett said: “This couple were well known here.

“I know that many people who knew them were shocked by this horrific incident.

“I want to appeal to anybody who has any information in relation to this incident to come forward as a matter of urgency.

“I must confirm that no arrests have been made in this case and this is not a domestic incident.

“If you were in the area on the 14th of January through to the 15th, please contact police officers as we especially want to find anybody who may have any dashcam footage and anybody in the area that has CCTV.

“We have got officers from our major crime unit, which is a regional team, who are working hard and working with a number of lines of enquiry, all in the effort to try and identify who is responsible for this horrific incident and to bring them to justice.”

Neighbours expressed their shock following the incident.

One neighbour said: “Ken and Freda were devoted to each other. This has shocked everyone who knew them.”

Another resident said: “We are totally shocked. We didn’t hear a thing.

“We didn’t know them, we’ve only just moved to the area ourselves. We didn’t even know their names.

“It is a really quiet area – odd bit of trouble, especially with living on the main road. But nothing like this. Really sad.”

A neighbour, two doors down from the couple, added: “I knew of their names because this a close-knit area – everybody knows everybody.

“It is shocking and upsetting. I have lived on this street for 53 years. It has been a lovely area to live. It is really sad.

“You would see Kenneth and Freda now and again but that was it. This is just shocking.”
