Leicester recently became the first city to enter a local lockdown, after it was found their number of confirmed cases was 10 times higher than the next highest city. However, some lockdown measures in the city have since been eased. Health Secretary Matt Hancock said that the latest data showed the seven-day infection rate in Leicester was down to 119 cases per 100,000 people – down from 125 when the prolonged lockdown was first announced in June 29. 

What do the new local lockdown rules mean for you?

Speaking from Downing Street, the Prime Minister said: “At the start of the pandemic, we knew far less about the spread of the virus and we had to take blanket national measures. 

“National lockdown was undoubtedly the right thing to do and has saved many thousands of lives. 

“Now, however, we know more about the virus, we understand the epidemiology better and our intelligence about where it is spreading is vastly improved. 

“That means we can control it through local action instead.”

From Saturday, July 18, local authorities in England will have more powers to tackle local coronavirus outbreaks. 

This means they will have the power to close specific premises, close outdoor spaces and cancel events they feel necessary.
