Liverpool fans miss Champions League match by heading to Ghent instead of Genk
Two letters made all the difference for two Liverpool fans who missed out on watching their side cruise to victory over Belgian side Genk because they mistakenly travelled to the city of Ghent some 100 miles away.
Rob, from London, and Lee, from Leicester, made the trip in the hope of seeing the Reds in Champions League action, but realised half an hour before kick-off their geography was somewhat off.
With no hope of getting to the Luminus Arena in time, they were instead left to watch the game in an Irish cafe.
Rob admitted the pair were “really embarrassed” about the true nature of their trip, having not had a chance to tell his wife before their story began to go viral online.
They also ended up missing out what would have been a joyous atmosphere among the away fans in the ground, as goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah helped Liverpool to a 4-1 win.
Rob said: “We took a taxi from the airport and drove past the stadium and said to the taxi driver, ‘We are going there tonight to watch Liverpool’, but he didn’t say much. In hindsight that should have made us realise.
“When we were checking into the hotel, the person working looked at us a bit quizzically but it was only when we went out to a restaurant, the waiter was a Ghent fan, and he told us our mistake.”
It meant they had wasted £130 each on rail tickets and £60 each on match tickets.
To compound their sorry mood, their woe spread across social media when radio station Radio 2 Oost-Vlaanderen photographed them commiserating their mistake.
“Me and Lee have a bit of a track record for this,” Rob admitted.
“Last time we tried to watch Liverpool we got on the wrong train – instead of taking the fast train, we ended up on the slow train which took six hours.
“I think next time we will let someone else book the travel.”
The pair have now been invited back by Genk to watch them take on Ghent in a league match in January, with a posh meal and guided tour of the stadium also thrown in.
Rob said the pair “would love to go” – it just remains to be seen whether they can find their way there.
