The first episode of the former actress’s Archetypes podcast was released yesterday with guest Serena Williams. Columnist Celia Walden said the interview allowed for “maximum navel-gazing”.

Ms Walden added that if the rest of the series is like the first episode, entitled The Misconception of Ambition with Serena Williams, it will be “week after week” of Meghan “interviewing herself”.

Writing in the Telegraph, the commentator said: “But the podcast is an interview with this inspirational sporting figure in name only.

“If the rest of the season is anything like the premiere, what we’re really going to be listening into week after week is Meghan interviewing herself.

“Maybe the former actress doesn’t realise she’s doing this.

“Or maybe the plan was always to invite a series of foils on to debate cultural and societal unfairnesses that Meghan has (coincidentally) also been a victim of.

“Certainly, this week’s offering, ‘The Misconception of Ambition’, allows for maximum navel-gazing.”

Meghan’s long-awaited podcast which explores female stereotypes dropped on Spotify on Tuesday.

In the first episode, the Duchess discusses being branded ambitious after starting her romance with Prince Harry.

She says: “I don’t remember ever personally feeling the negative connotation behind the word ambitious until I started dating my now husband.”

Meanwhile, Serena reveals the Duke of Sussex helped her with the decision to retire from tennis.

Meghan, who quit as a working royal with Harry in 2020, says: “I think, you know, I think both of us, or the three of us, really know that sometimes the right decision isn’t the easiest decision.

“It takes a lot of courage, I think, too, to stop something in many ways than to keep going sometimes.”

The Duchess also admitted to being “so tired” during pregnancy.

Serena says: “You were under a lot of stress”, and the Duchess replying: “Yeah it’s true.”

Meghan also told how Archie narrowly escaped a fire in his nursery during her and Harry’s South Africa tour in 2019.

Meghan said she found out after giving a speech in the Nyanga township in Cape Town before having to rush out for another royal engagement.

She said: “We came back. And, of course, as a mother, you go, ‘Oh, my God, what?’

“Everyone’s in tears, everyone’s shaken. And what do we have to do? Go out and do another official engagement. I said, ‘This doesn’t make any sense’.”

Meghan and Harry signed their Spotify deal in 2020 after quitting as working royals for a new life in California.
