The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are bringing up “multi-dimensional, interesting, kind, creative people”, Meghan said in a new, wide-ranging interview with Variety while referring to her two adored toddlers. The former actress was asked how would she react if either one of her children – Archie Harrison and Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana – told her in the next 10 or 15 years they wanted to get a career in entertainment.

Meghan said: “I would say, ‘Great!’ When you become a parent, you genuinely want your kids to find the things that bring them complete joy. They’re our kids, obviously, and they’re part of a legacy and a tradition and a family that will have other expectations. But I want them to be able to carve out their own path.

“If it’s the entertainment industry, great. And also, good luck. There are so many people that will talk about what opened the door for my children. But it still takes talent and a lot of grit.”

Providing an insight into the upbringing she is giving to Archie, three, and Lili, one, she added: “We’re creating multi-dimensional, interesting, kind, creative people. That’s who our kids are.”

Archie was born at a London hospital on May 6 2019, when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were still working members of the Firm.

While Meghan chose against following in the footsteps of Princess Diana and Kate, Princess of Wales – who introduced their children to the world on the steps of the hospital just hours after they had given birth – she and Harry held a photocall at Windsor Castle two days later to proudly show their son.

On the same day, the boy was introduced to the late Queen and Prince Philip.

Archie also travelled with Meghan and Harry to South Africa four months later as the two royals were carrying out a 10-day-long tour in the country.

Lili, on the other hand, was born on June 4 2021, more than one year after the Sussexes had stepped down as senior royals.

This, coupled with the fact they were already living in California at the time, granted the Sussexes more freedom over when to share the first picture of their daughter.

They did so on Christmas last year, when they shared a family photograph in which a giggling Lili was being held up in the air by a beaming Meghan.

A second picture of Lili was shared by the Sussexes in June to mark her first birthday.

Meghan spoke to Variety this summer as she was meant to be included in the Variety’s Power of Women, a yearly list including notable achievements in media and entertainment by women.

However, as the special issue was meant to be released during the period of royal mourning in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II’s death, the publication of the interview was pushed back out of respect.

This also gave the chance to Meghan to publicly pay tribute to the late sovereign in the interview, where she describes Prince Harry’s grandmother as a “shining example” of female leadership.

Paying tribute to the late monarch, Meghan added: “I feel deep gratitude to have been able to spend time with her and get to know her.”
