Mayonnaise sold at budget supermarket chain Lidl is now being recalled over listeria fears.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) ordered stores to pull Potts’ Truffle Mayonnaise after an alarm was raised about contamination.

The watchdog has urged shoppers to not to eat the condiment due to the health risk and return it to stores for a refund.

Customers have been told to check the use by date and the batch number for the listed product.

All 230g jars of the Potts’ Truffle Mayonnaise with best before date of July 2024 from batch 18823 are being recalled.

A statement from the FSA said: ‘Pott’s Partnership Ltd is recalling the product.

‘Point of sale notices will be displayed in retail stores where this product is sold.

‘If you have bought the above product do not eat it. Instead return it to the store you bought it from for a full refund.’

Symptoms caused by the bacteria can be similar to flu. They include fever, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over the age of 65, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.

According to the NHS, if a pregnant person gets listeriosis, there is a risk it could cause miscarriage or stillbirth.
