Lib Dem meltdown: Jo Swinson red-faced as controversial education post sparks outrage

Ms Swinson laid out her plans for changes the Lib Dems would make should they make it into power on December 13. But the party were reminded of their record on education following their rise to Government in coalition with the Conservatives in 2010. Ms Swinson was among Lib Dems who had initially backed scrapping tuition fees for students.

Taking to Twitter, Ms Swinson initially posted: “By introducing a ‘curriculum for life’ we can give students the life skills they really need.

“From social and health skills to financial literacy and environmental awareness.“

It was followed with a link that gave a more detailed review of their proposals.

Twitter soon stormed back at the plans.

One person wrote: “They really need not to be saddled by you with a lifetime of unrepayable debt at the age of 20.”

A second said: “And how to kill a million people with the push of a button.”

A third added: “Lib Dem policies can’t be taken seriously.

“We all know that you would drop them quicker than you can say tuition fees if there’s any chance of getting back into bed with the Tories.”

Others reminded Ms Swinson that the “future was brighter when you weren’t in power”.

Another claimed that Ms Swinson and the Lib Dems’ election strategy had backfired after “attacking” Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

A fourth concluded: “You stand no chance of winning.

“In fact, you’re likely to lose seats.

“Stop being ridiculous.”

It comes as former Labour peer Lord Alan Sugar told voters to back Boris Johnson as opposed to Jeremy Corbyn.

Writing in The Sun, he argued that Mr Johnson would be able to break the Brexit stalemate.

He said: “Jeremy Corbyn has turned Labour into a negative anti-business party that is clueless on how the economy works.

“His £1.2trillion spending splurge is complete madness.”

Lord Sugar also revealed that this week’s election is “the most significant in my lifetime.”

He added: “As a former Jewish Labour man, this is a difficult thing for me to write.

“On Thursday, it’s time for Sun readers to tell Corbyn to resign and get a sensible person to take the helm and make Labour great again.”
