Lib Dem humiliation: Moaning Swinson trounced in Twitterstorm over BBC debate appearance

The UK goes back to the polls in December with the official campaign beginning earlier this week. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to go head-to-head with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in a televised debate on December 6 – just six days before the polls open. The event will be shown live on the BBC from Southampton.

But, an outraged Ms Swinson took to social media to express her horror at not being invited to take part in the debate.

At present, the Conservative party hold 298 seats in the House of Commons.

This is followed by Labour’s 242 and the Scottish National Party’s 35.

The Lib Dems languish in fourth with just 20 seats.

But in an impassioned tweet, the Lib Dems wrote: “The voters of this country deserve to hear from Jo Swinson on the debate stage.

“Not just from two men who want to deliver Brexit.”

But this stance was mocked by those on Twitter, with many criticising the Lib Dems for their last time in Government, propping up David Cameron’s Tories.

One wrote: “Until Jo Swinson becomes a credible option to be PM, just post a leaflet through the door. Thanks.”

Another said: “Unless she’s willing to decry the evils of austerity and the Government actions over the past 9 years she’d be better served by an empty podium.”

A third wrote: “There would not be enough time in the debate to have all the fringe parties there.

“So it makes logical sense to have the only the two that have a realistic chance of being PM.”

A fourth summed up their views by writing: “You won 12 seats in the current Parliament.

“That’s why you haven’t qualified for the leader board.”

Since the last election in 2017, the Lib Dems have claimed a further eight seats from disgruntled former Conservatives and Labour defecting.

Some also turned their back on the ill-fated Independent Group for Change.

It comes as polls show Labour support in the North has shrunk, with voters in the region turning their back on Mr Corbyn to vote for Mr Johnson.

YouGov showed Labour support has dropped, with prominent industrial counties Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside now jumping ship to the Conservatives.

The poll shows a drop in support for Mr Corbyn by 25 points compared to a drop in numbers for Mr Johnson by just three points.

This puts the Tories on 33 percent in the region that voted to leave.

Support is at 14 percent for the Brexit Party, with the Lib Dems on 17 percent.
