Lazio fans filmed making Nazi salutes in Glasgow ahead of Celtic game

Italian football fans have been filmed making Nazi salutes as they marched through Glasgow ahead of a Europa League group stage match.

Several Lazio supporters could be seen making the fascist gesture as they made their way to Celtic’s Parkhead ground.

The group were also chanting far-right slogans as they walked up Buchanan Street, as pedestrians appeared shocked.

Long lines of police officers were then seen escorting the Rome club’s fans to the ground before kick-off at 8pm.

Specialist anti-mafia police were reportedly flown to Scotland to monitor the Lazio “ultras” who have a reputation for Nazi gestures and racist chanting.

About 1,500 Lazio fans are believed to have travelled from Italy for the game.

The incident came after Merseyside Police said they had identified a fan responsible for unfurling a banner showing a “racist stereotype” of Liverpool FC star Divock Origi.

The banner showed an obscene picture of the striker’s head superimposed onto a naked man’s body.

It was unfurled in the away section of the Luminus Arena in Genk, before Liverpool’s Champions League group stage game against the Belgian side on Wednesday night.

Merseyside Police said local police in Belgium are now investigating the image, which the club described as a “racist stereotype”.

The banner also appeared among hundreds of others in the Liverpool end at last season’s Champions League final in Madrid.

UEFA has yet to rule if the banner was offensive or racist, which will determine what sanctions to impose, with penalties for the latter being considerably stronger.

Liverpool quickly released a statement condemning the banner.

It said: “Liverpool Football Club condemns the offensive banner displayed in our section of the ground, prior to kick off.

“To be clear, the image used perpetuated a racist stereotype. This is completely unacceptable.

“We acted swiftly to have the banner removed and we are now working with the local authorities and stadium team in Genk to identify those responsible.

“Any subsequent action will be taken in keeping with our sanctions process.”
