The BBC political editor and Sky News’ Beth Rigby were both attacked by Maria Caulfield, the MP for Lewes, amid news of Mr Johnson’s arrival last month. The Prime Minister had just spent nearly a week in intensive care after he succumbed to the deadly coronavirus, but was out in time to welcome Wilfred to the world. It was the first child between Mr Johnson and Carrie Symonds, and the world congratulated the couple for the safe delivery of their son.

But Ms Caulfield condemned both Ms Kuenssberg and Ms Rigby for not praising the couple after the announcement was made.

On Twitter, Ms Kuenssberg initially wrote: “And now all becomes clear…Carrie Symonds and Boris Johnson have had a baby boy at a London hospital this morning.”

Ms Rigby also tweeted: “NEW: Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds have announced the birth of a “healthy baby boy at a London hospital earlier this morning.”

However, Ms Caulfield was unhappy at the pair’s reporting.

She said on social media: “I think the word Laura and Beth are looking for is ‘congratulations’.”

Ms Kuenssberg did not appear to respond but, in the face of criticism, Ms Rigby replied that it was obvious her congratulations were given.

Ms Rigby added: “This is called reporting the news.

“It goes without saying that I’m delighted Carrie Symonds and PM have had a healthy baby boy.”

Wilfred was born on April 29.

It came after Mr Johnson stayed in St Thomas’ Hospital, in London, where he was recovering from coronavirus.

Ms Symonds also displayed symptoms of the killer infection and self-isolated while she was pregnant.

According to Yahoo! News, many within the Conservative Government have been frustrated with the BBC and Sky over its reporting throughout the coronavirus outbreak.

One critic, Nadine Dorries, liked Ms Caulfield’s tweet, while launching her own attack on the press.

She alleged that the daily press briefings, which are attended by a member of the cabinet and health officials, had shown the real leanings of broadcasters and journalists.

She said: “The nation tuned into daily press briefings and saw journalists at their very left leaning, gotcha worst.

“They failed to adapt and behave appropriately in a crisis.

“Regarded it as a political event to trip up the gov trying to keep people safe. Big mistake.”
