Prince Philip’s youngest granddaughter shares his love of carriage driving, as Lady Louise Windsor is revealed to be “excellently skilled” behind the reins. Sophie Wessex said her daughter had a “natural talent” for the sport and she was recently seen competing in the Windsor Horse Show in July. Lady Louise shared this passion with the late Duke of Edinburgh, who would regularly attend her competitions to cheer from the sidelines.
The List reported: “The Royal Family is known for its collective interest in hobbies such as horse riding, polo and hunting, and it looks as though Lady Louise Windsor has followed suit.
“According to Woman and Home, she is an excellently skilled carriage driver and has carved quite the space for herself within the activity.
“Her mother, Countess of Wessex, spoke about her daughter’s skillset during a virtual appearance at the Royal Windsor Horse Show: ‘To actually participate in the horse show you know, has been really special thing for her to do.’
“Sophie said that her daughter’s skillset is a natural talent and that she absolutely outshines the rest of the family.
“Sophie said, ‘I trail in her wake frankly. No, she is so naturally good at it, she really is. It’s something that she has taken to very well.’
“School, however, did get in the way of Louise’s passion. Sophie revealed that Louise took a break from carriage driving to carve out time for studying, which kept her away from the Royal Windsor Horse Show. The show was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, so it turned out that Louise didn’t miss out on much.”
In July, members of the Royal Family including the Queen, gathered in Windsor Great Park to watch Lady Louise Windsor compete in the annual horse show.
She rode in Prince Philip’s four-wheel dark green carriage, which was reportedly left to her in his will.
As a clear indication of their close relationship, Prince Philip also left his two fell ponies, Balmoral Nevis and Notlaw Storm, to his granddaughter.
The carriage was used in April as part of the funeral procession of the late Duke, to pay tribute his love of carriage driving and equestrian sports.
At the Windsor Horse Show in 2019, Prince Philip had watched on as Lady Louise came third in the Private Driving Singles carriage event.
In a recent interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, the Countess of Wessex spoke of the relationship between her daughter and the Duke, and their shared passion for the sport.

She told Naga Munchetty, “He was really encouraging of Louise and when she not only said can I have a go, but then showed a flair for it, he was just brilliant with her.
